This is number 17 for me, and I’m just as excited as I was when my first book was published! I’m delighted to announce the publication of Shanghai Escape. This is the true story of Lily Toufar Lash who escaped Austria with her family as the Second World War was approaching. She made her way to Shanghai, China - a strange place indeed for a young Jewish girl from Vienna. When other countries around the world were turning their backs on Jewish people trying to get away from the unbearable conditions that Hitler had imposed on them, Shanghai was one place that allowed Jews to settle. More than 20,000 Jewish refugees went there, Lily and her family among them.
Conditions there were certainly not ideal. Eventually Lily and the other Jewish families were forced to move into a ghetto in an area of Shanghai called Hongkew. There was little food to eat in the ghetto, terrible living conditions, and sickness all around. And when rumours began to circulate that Jews may be in as much danger in Hongkew as they were in Europe, Lily and the others wondered if they would ever feel truly safe and at home again.
If you want to find out what happened to Lily and the other Jews who went to Shanghai, then I hope you will read Shanghai Escape. And stay tuned for information about the official launch of this book which will take place some time in November during Holocaust Education Week.
Another book in the Holocaust Remembrance Series for Young Readers, published by Second Story Press. Enjoy!!!
